Grandpa Steve Memories By Cassidy

Memories

Of grandpa Steve by Cassidy Fife May 29, 2013

: After eating always he would make sure we did not have any more room in our tummies.

: He always would ask questions like: “Who wants to get the mail with grandpa?” Or “Who wants to have a bowl of cereal with grandpa?”

: He helped me with my Jump Rope for Heart(for my 4th grade class) and made sure I got to the t-shirt, and I did.

: He made sure that Sabbath was always fed when we weren’t here

: He always called me big girl and a lot of the time he whispered in my ear “Guess what?” I’d answer “What?” He’d always say “ Grandpa loves you.’’

More Pictures of Dad

My Bestie cousin Shannie put these together on Facebook. I love them.

Read Obituary.

My dad was always telling me something. A story, a weird fact, something that had happened with someone we knew or someone I didn’t even know, he always had something to tell me. My dad’s stories were important to him. He looked for facts, details and finishing touches in everything, so I am going to read a few things today today. I want to get the details correct so he won’t say to me, “now, that’s not quite right” I have a letter he wrote home to his parents when while serving in the Coast Guard, a write-up about him in the Herald News Letter and also a write up in the ELKS flyer in the veterans corner feature.

On Sundays growing up we would go to Nate’s diner for a pancake and I’d play Pac man while my dad had coffee with friends. On Saturdays, I was usually with my Uncle Don while my mom worked and we would meet up with my dad at Joe’s spic and span for lunch. I loved to sit by my dad on the red stools as Ron or Joe slid water down the bar to me, my dad always had a coffee cup in front of him and he would add teaspoons of water to his cup while I ate my hamburger patty.

I helped my dad deliver Ice when he had his business, I remember sitting at the bar in browns billiards in Payson/Santaquin? Having a coke while my dad finished up. Yes, a bar.

My dad built me the biggest swing ever. In our back yard I had a huge swing made out of two telephone poles. I would twist the ropes for hours with my neighborhood friends.

My dad made sure I had what I needed, always. I always had enough coffee money in my pocket and little extra for gas.

My dad helped me with my son Coby. A week or so ago Coby showed up with a car he had bought with his own money- a car that needs to be restored. My dad stopped by my desk at work inquiring on Coby’s “project” it seemed like he threw his hands in the air, but my dad was secretly excited to see how it all played out. On Monday earlier on in the day he gave Coby $10 bucks to get some keys for his car made. It was the first step, and my dad wanted to help him get started with his car.

I am going to miss running around my house like a maniac and hearing a soft knock at the door, then the door opening and my dad saying” knock knock” This making me stop what I was doing for a quick chat.

I am going to miss being out in my yard and hearing one of the rigs fire up and seeing my dad come down Marty’s driveway. He always did his wave and would stop for a quick hello, but was usually on his way to a car show.

At work, at the end of my dad’s shift he would clock out and say, I will see everyone tomorrow… or tonight and he would peak his head in a wave to me.

Cassidy trusted her grandpa to take care of our dog whenever we would go out of town, I will miss coming home to a dog that had been well fed over the course of a weekend. My dad definitely helped our dog get to his current weight of 118lbs. My dad liked helping, helping and working made him feel important.

Both me and my dad dislike mash potatoes, it’s something we had in common.

It will be hard to see an empty seat at my kids programs and games. He didn’t miss very many.

I will miss walking into my parent’s house on Sunday, music blaring, and my dad sitting on the couch. He would say to me, “this is one of my favorite songs. Most the time he would stand up and turn it down because I was usually in a hurry, but once in a while I would listen to the song finish out.

I have to say mostly I will miss my pal; I will miss seeing my dad at work. I was super lucky to work with my dad for over seven years. My dad took great care of me; he loved my husband and kids. He took good care of my mom and told me he would marry her all over again, he always called her “my sweet wife” when talking about her. He and Marty had had a lot of fun, they were always together. Today is Mart’s birthday, as well as my grandma Gina’s. Marty told me the other day as we were making plans, what would be more cool then spending his birthday honoring my dad. I hope my dad is also celebrating Gina’s birthday with her.

My dad NEVER said anything bad about anyone, ever… I would be ranting and raving about something and... He told me everyone has good in them and to focus on that. Look for the good in everyone sometimes its hard, but it’s there. That is the best thing he ever taught me.

I love you dad.

Cemetary

My dad had full Military honors at his funeral, I think the flag looks nice

We went back later on in the day to see how everything turned out. My dad loved Memorial Day,  so it is fitting that he was out there for the kick off of this beautiful Holiday weekend. Rest in Peace dad.

Grandpa Steve

Steven Paul McAffee

1942 ~ 2013

Steven Paul McAffee, 71, passed away on May 20, 2013. Steve was born March 20, 1942 in Provo, Utah. He was the first born child of Paul Gust and Virginia Rose Burningham McAffee. He loved his three younger sisters and took very good care of them. He enjoyed being a big brother.

As a boy Steve participated in the Little League World Series in 1953. He loved baseball. When his son and grandson played he enjoyed coaching and helping out. He was proud that he earned his Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed his paper route for the Daily Herald; this started his long career with the newspaper business. He kept his route even when he could drive.

He attended schools in Provo, Utah. He bragged that he graduated high school twice, first from B Y High and then Provo High School in 1960. After graduation he went into the Coast Guard Reserve.

He was always patriotic and proud of his service as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard. He was stationed at the Monterey Life Boat Station and Point Reyes Lighthouse. He was a mechanic and fireman while serving in the Coast Guard. He received an honorable discharge in 1964. He also was a member of the American Legion for 25 years.

On September 3, 1965 he married his sweet wife Marcia Lee Barney in Provo, Utah. Together they had lots of fun dragging center in many of his hot cars. In 1970 they welcomed a son, Martin and seven years later were blessed with a daughter Lacy.

Steve loved to work. He started out as a paper boy for the Daily Herald. Then he took a job in the circulation room at age 17. In 1963 a job opening in the press room intrigued him and he was there until 2002. After "retiring" from the newspaper business he took a job as a courier for UVRMC. He was there for five years. He then took a job at Capital Community Bank and was still working there at the time of his passing. He loved his job at the bank with his daughter Lacy. He also loved his small business ventures as the co-owner of Campus Ski and Cycle and G&S Ice.

Steve loved cars. At one time he owned 11 and was told he had to get a dealers license if he purchased more. His favorites were his 57 Chevy Nomad, and the 57 & 63 Corvettes. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the 1965 GMC truck, restored with his son is most special. He enjoyed meeting up with his buddies from the Gents Car Club.

Steve loved bluegrass music, but his favorite was Johnny Cash. Steve loved to tell the story of when he rode the white roller coaster at Lagoon with Johnny Cash. If you wanted to find Steve you could find him at Joe's Spic N Span or Nate's diner with all his coffee buddies. He loved history and was a member of the Utah Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia Lee & children Marty S. McAffee and Lacy G. (Nate) Fife all of Provo. His Sisters Rosemarie McAffee and Kathleen Virginia Smith both of Provo. His three grandchildren Coby Josiah Salazar, Cannon Tay McAffee and Cassidy Marie Fife. He is preceded in death by his parents & younger sister Suzanne Alice McAffee Huff. Steve loved his nieces and nephews. He was happy to help them and considered them his children.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, May 24, 2013 at the Provo Elks Lodge #849, 1000 South University Ave. Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Thursday, May 23, from 6-8 pm and Friday at the Elks Lodge one hour prior to services. Interment, Provo City Cemetery. Running

Nate has signed us up for the Ragnar this summer. So in order to get ready I am trying to do a 5-K every few weeks. I am really lucky that I have a huge group of friends that are up for some fun. It's a great motivation. This first one was the Pink Run in Pleasant Grove Utah. I had my best time at 29 minutes(April 27th, 2013) Most of these gals are friends from up skiing, but of course Candce my running buddy, Shannie and Kara were there too.
Kelsey,Candice, Tara, me, Kara, Shannie, Jenny, Mandi and Michelle

Cassidy and I did the Race for Red at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center on May 11th. Cass did the fun run and she took 4th place. I was so proud of her. She did it in about nine minutes.

Cass, me, Shannie, Candice and Michelle. Love my running buddies

More From San Fran

Here the girls are at the Fitzgerald marine life reserve

Cassidy really loved the seals, and sea lions. I didn't get a very good picture of them.

My kids really liked this beach, it was cold, but they had fun exploring

Muir Woods. It was fun to see the very tall trees, much different from our pine trees.

We made a stop at the De Young Art Museum at Golden Gate Park. Easily could have spent a whole day here.

San Francisco

Our first stop in the San Francisco area was the Fitzgerald Marine Life Reserve. It was not very warm, but the kids loved the beach. They were able to see all kinds of fish life. This is a picture of the girls. Avery, Ashytn, Cassidy, Ember, Jordyn and Kate

We made a stop at Muir Woods. This was amamzing and I want to go back. This is pretty much how the actual Redwood forests are, but this National Park is closer to San Fran

In line for our Alcatraz tour Coby stopped by the Al Capone banner.

We took an audio tour of Alcatrz. It is so cool, and creepy.

We took in a Giants game. It was so fun. It was a bit chilly and there were only 42 thousand people in attendance. The Arizona Diamondbacks won the game, but the Giants tied it up in the 9th making it pretty exciting

Easter Camping

Over Easter we went Camping with the Whitlocks

We were so happy to be with Angela, Brandon and Cheyenne

Brandon who is a pretty big deal in the hill climbing world, helped Cass with her first dirt bike experience. It was really fun
